Purpose of Library Policies

The purpose of most library policies is to make the library’s materials accessible to as many students as possible. It is the goal of the library to collect as little money as possible by encouraging students to return materials on time and in good condition.

Due dates ensure that other students in need of the same materials will have the opportunity to use them in a timely manner.

Item limits prevent a student from checking out all the items on a given subject thereby depriving other students of information on that topic.

Fines encourage, through disincentive, students to return materials so that other students can use them too.

Replacement costs allow the library to purchase another item to replace the one that was lost. The purpose is not to replace the actual title (this is often impossible or too expensive), but to replace the lost/damaged book with one that is currently needed. Books whose actual replacement cost exceeds fines plus replacement cost plus service charge are subject to full compensation.

The service charge is meant to compensate the college for staff time lost in positive activities. Activities which the service charge helps cover are: Business Office time, Circulation clerk time preparing notices, postage for notices, de-accessioning the lost item; identifying, ordering, cataloging, and processing the replacement.
