Leona Tate to Speak at Nunez in Celebration of Black History Month

Leona Tate

Leona Tate, who at six years old was one of four children to desegregate McDonogh 19 Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960, will speak at Nunez Community College on Feb. 15 to mark Black History Month. This presentation of Nunez’s Pelican Leadership Institute is free and open to the public.

Nunez Community College in Chalmette will welcome New Orleans civil rights leader Leona Tate to speak at the college in celebration of Black History Month as part of its Pelican Leadership Institute professional development series.

Tate, who at six years old was one of four children to desegregate McDonogh 19 Elementary School in New Orleans in 1960, will speak Feb. 15 at 12 p.m. in the Nunez Auditorium. The community is invited to attend this free event.

“I am excited that Leona Tate will join us to share her wisdom. She is a monumental voice and figure in civil-rights history and an ongoing advocate helping to build an equitable future for those who live in our community,” said Jacinta Massey, Nunez Director of Diversity & Inclusion.

Tate, who heads the Leona Tate Foundation for Change. Inc., will offer her reflections on her historic enrollment at McDonogh 19 and the challenges still facing the country and the New Orleans area. She said her experience at McDonogh 19, while harrowing, inspired her lifelong mission as an advocate for justice.

“God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things,” said Tate.

More information on Tate, her foundation and her efforts to transition the former McDonogh 19 Historical Landmark to the Tate Etienne Prevost Interpretive Center can be found at leonatatefoundation.org and tepcenter.org.

Nunez is currently registering students for its eight-week Mini-Session B term, which begins March 16 and offers full-credit, transferable courses in half the time of a normal term. More than 60 Mini-Session B courses can be viewed at Nunez.edu/schedule.
