Nunez Community College has reopened its Pelican Pantry as part of its efforts to address food insecurity of both students and employees.

A small, brief ceremony celebrated the re-opening of  the pantry, which had been closed since the coronavirus pandemic shut down on-campus instruction in March. The reopening followed the Nunez Community College Foundation meeting, which was its first on-site meeting since February.

The meeting was conducted on Friday, Nov. 13, also recognized as World Kindness Day.

“It is important to recognize that food insecurity is a reality that is a barrier to learning. I’m grateful for the generosity of our Nunez Foundation Board that is supporting the re-opening of our Pelican Pantry on campus. This pantry provides basic needs and items for our students that helps them to become more successful in the classroom in a meaningful way,” said Nunez Chancellor Dr. Tina Tinney.

Dr. Tinney was joined for the reopening ceremony by Nunez Foundation Board Chair Clifford Englande and Nunez ADA Coordinator Jacinda Massey.

In addition to providing non-perishable food and hygiene items to students, the Pelican Pantry also serves any Nunez employees in need of assistance. To receive assistance or to make a donation to the Pelican Pantry, contact Jacinta Massey at jmassey@nunez.edu or 504-278-6435.
