Nunez Community College’s MJ Foster Promise Presentation has been rescheduled for April 7.

The event was postponed in the wake of the tornado that struck Arabi near the Nunez campus on March 22. After tending to Nunez students affected by the tragic storm, the college is once again ready to invite the public to learn about this innovative new program.

Nunez will host an Academic and Career-Technical Program Preview Night and Foster Promise Presentation on Thursday, April 7, from 5-7 p.m. in the Kane Technology Building on the Nunez campus. The presentation will serve as the public’s first opportunity to ask questions about the state’s new $10.5 million annual “last dollar” award fund, which is available to Louisianans over the age of 21 who meet broad eligibility requirements.

“The M.J. Foster Promise Program will be available to all Louisiana residents (21 years or older) with individual student awards available on a first-come, first-served basis,” according to information shared by the Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS) and Louisiana Offices of Student Financial Assistance (LOSFA). “Students will qualify for financial support to earn credentials that align to high-demand jobs in growing industry sectors, such as construction, healthcare, information technology, manufacturing, and transportation and logistics.”

After students complete their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and MJ Foster Promise applications, whatever tuition and fees aren’t covered by financial aid will be covered by the Foster Promise Program.

“This program will remove one of the largest barriers preventing qualifying members of our community from earning a credential or degree that sets them on the path toward earning a better quality of life,” said Nunez Chancellor Dr. Tina Tinney. “This opens the door to access to all eligible citizens in the state of Louisiana.”

Qualifying students will be eligible to receive up to $3,200 per year or a maximum award of $6,400 if they enroll in a qualifying program at their respective college.
