Representatives from American Sugar Refining, Inc., owner of the Domino® Sugar Chalmette Refinery and a member of the ASR Group® family of companies, presented Nunez Community College with a $12,500 donation at Nunez’s Fall 2025 Scholarship Breakfast.
Pedro Gomez, Assistant General Manager of the Chalmette Refinery, and his team were on hand to match the donation ASR Group made in the fall of 2024, and to personally congratulate Noah Hernandez, a student in Nunez’s Process Technology program and one of the recipients of this year’s Domino Sugar PTEC Scholarships. ASR Group’s latest donation will fund additional PTEC scholarships at Nunez beginning with the Spring 2026 semester.
“We want to send a huge thank you to Domino Sugar for their generous donation to the Nunez PTEC Program,” said Kyle Steib, Process Technology Program Chair. “Their support helps us elevate our training labs, expand student resources, and continue preparing the next generation of skilled operators. We’re grateful for our partnership with ASR Group and Domino Sugar for their investment in our students’ future.”
Briahn Artigues, Operations Trainer at the Chalmette Refinery and a Nunez PTEC graduate, attended the Scholarship Breakfast and joined her colleagues to present the donation to her alma mater. She spoke about the value of Nunez’s training facilities, and by extension their regular upgrades, following the company’s donation in the fall of 2024.
“The training aids that Nunez provides their students are absolutely stellar. They provided me with insight and understanding of most equipment and operations before starting my career,” said Artigues.
“Our scholarship support for the Nunez Community College Process Technology program reflects our commitment to investing in our community, providing jobs and supporting the next generation of process technologists and manufacturing leaders,” said Gomez. “We’re proud to continue our partnership with Nunez in building a brighter future for students in the program.”
In addition to training PTEC students on equipment that provides authentic hands-on experiences, the program also allows them to build soft skills by organizing networking opportunities each semester. These include mock interviews conducted by members of the PTEC Advisory Committee—which is comprised of high-ranking officials from local industry partners—and broader meet-and-greet events on campus where students are invited to meet representatives from more than a dozen employers.
Registration is open now for Spring 2026 at Nunez.edu. Classes begin Jan. 20. Students who need assistance applying or registering can visit the Student Success Center in the AST Building on the Nunez campus, or visit Nunez.edu/Advising.
