Career and Technical Education Advisor (CTE Advisor)

Job Summary
This position involves assessing student needs, goals, interests and prior academic experiences in order to guide students in the design and implementation of a successful academic and career plan. Advisors collaborate with faculty members to address the academic/technical advising needs of individuals or groups of students including close supervision of dual enrolled high school students in on campus CTE programs and courses. Advisors are also responsible for understanding and interpreting the College’s policies and academic options of all Career and Technical Education degree and certificate programs to help facilitate the student’s academic and career success. Reports to the Dean of Career and Technical Education.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with admissions and financial aid staff to advise new CTE students (e.g., evaluates transcripts; develop plans of study, etc.)
  • Provide academic advising to returning CTE students, individually or in groups, about College policies, programs of study and degree options. Provide students with information about alternatives and possible consequences of academic decisions.
  • Supervise on campus high school dual enrollment (DE) students enrolled in CTE courses. Collaborate with appropriate high school personnel, Nunez faculty members, staff, and administration to address the needs of DE individuals or groups of students.
  • Counsel CTE students on career options and guiding their development of job search skills.
  • Supervises special projects to support CTE students in career building
  • Establish and maintain relationships with assigned Deans/Department Chair/Program Directors to understand and clarify departmental expectations. Maintain current knowledge of all the CTE degree and certificate programs.
  • Work closely with Academic and Student Affairs to connect students to academic support (e.g., tutoring).
  • Complete other advising duties as requested such as: track retention, authorize add/drops, and conduct degree audits for CTE students.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s in Counseling, Education, Psychology, Human Resources, or any related field.
  • A degree in counseling or higher education can replace direct experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work in excess of 40 hours a week, which may include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to view a computer screen for long periods of time.
  • Ability to function in a high-pressure, stressful environment and meet stringent deadlines.
  • Ability to operate a computer and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to carry <25 lbs., stand, sit, reach, bend, and climb.
