The 2025-2026 Nunez Pelicans Baseball team was introduced to the public Aug. 22 during Nunez Community College’s first Summer Baseball Bash. The fundraiser event drew well over 100 guests to the Physical Activity Center to support the Pels, including St. Bernard Parish officials.
The Athletics Department at Nunez Community College marked the closing of summer with an exclamation point, celebrating with friends and supporters of Pelican Baseball at the college’s first Summer Baseball Bash.
The Physical Activity Center (PAC) was at capacity the evening of Aug. 22, with many St. Bernard Parish officials showing their support at the event. The fundraiser was a big party featuring dancing (thanks to tunes from DJ Louis Lehr, who is also the team statistician), door prizes and an introduction to the 2025-2026 Pelican team players.
Dr. Tina Tinney, Nunez Chancellor, said she couldn’t help but be “Pelican Proud of the turnout! Our team is such an asset to our college and our community, and it was wonderful to see so many come out to meet the team and show their Pelican pride, too!”
Joining the Pelicans as special supporters that evening were St. Bernard Parish President Louis Pomes, and Parish Council members Josh Moran (District B), Cindi Meyer (District C), Ryan Randall (District D) and Amanda Mones (District E). Head Coach and Athletic Director Glenn Powell was moved by the public display of support, and grateful that his players were there to see it themselves.
“Thank you to everyone who joined us for our first annual Nunez Summer Baseball Bash this past Friday night! It was a fantastic night of fun, music, and community spirit, with an exceptional turnout,” he said. “Pelican Baseball is so grateful for the generous support from our donors, volunteers, players and supporters. They made this event a resounding success, which will kick off an exciting year for our baseball program.”
Powell hopes to carry the momentum of the Bash into the season when the Pels open their fall schedule hosting Southern University at New Orleans Sept. 20 at Noel Suarez Stadium in Chalmette. The fall season is a 15-game campaign with seven games on home turf. All home games are scheduled on weekend afternoons or weeknight evenings. Nunez encourages the community at large to come out for some hometown fun and to support their team.
The Pels are surging, coming off their winningest season in the program’s eight-year history. Eight players from last year’s squad signed to continue their baseball careers at the university level. Twenty-three sophomores and redshirt freshmen return for Nunez.
