Nunez Community College is one of just six Louisiana colleges and universities listed as affordable according to a study by the National College Attainment Network.
The National College Attainment Network (NCAN) recently identified Nunez Community College in Chalmette as one of just six institutions of higher learning in Louisiana that qualify as affordable according to its criteria.
In its Affordability Gap 2025 study, NCAN identified Nunez, Delgado Community College, Louisiana Delta Community College, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Southern University at New Orleans and Southern University at Shreveport as the only Louisiana institutions that ranked as affordable. NCAN’s formula ranks a college as affordable if the sum of the total price for in-state tuition, plus $300 for emergency expenses that students are likely to incur over the year, equal less than the average student’s combined financial aid in the form of grants (such as Pell and TOPS), loans, Federal work study, expected family contribution and a student’s estimated wages from a summer job.
“Nunez has taken great strides to ensure that our educational opportunities are both accessible and affordable. We know that time can be an enemy to those who are seeking employment in lucrative fields that offer a good quality of life,” said Dr. Tina Tinney, Nunez Chancellor. “With an intentional focus on offering condensed programs, reduced cost of books and supplies, and scholarship opportunities, the return on investment and time at Nunez is quite literally life changing for those who take advantage of what we have to offer.”
Using financial data from the 2022-23 academic year, NCAN found that, nationwide, just 48 percent of community colleges and 35 percent of bachelor’s-granting institutions qualified as affordable. Furthermore, the study showed that the affordability gap grew at community colleges by nearly $200 over the previous year.
The Louisiana Community and Technical College System (LCTCS), which includes Nunez, has not raised tuition at its 12 colleges since 2015 in a deliberate attempt to keep its colleges affordable.
NCAN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1995 that promotes college access.
