Students in Nunez Community College’s Wind Energy Technology program practice climbing safety for working at heights. The program recently received Global Wind Organisation approval to offer four additional training certificates that will be accepted by employers around the world.

The Wind Energy Technology program at Nunez Community College will offer four additional certificates recognized by employers around the world following a recent visit from the Global Wind Organisation (GWO).

An auditor from the GWO visited the Nunez campus in February and determined that the Wind program is ready and equipped to begin offering the following:

  • Crane and Hoist – Basic User
  • Slinger Signaller
  • Control of Hazardous Energies – Basic User
  • Control of Hazardous Energies – Electrical Safety

The new courses will join Nunez’s current training lineup, which includes:

  • Basic Safety Training
  • Advanced Rescue Training
  • Basic Technical Training
  • Enhanced First Aid
  • Wind Limited Access

“I’m excited that we’ve accomplished so much in the last year and a half in terms of expanding our wind technician training capabilities. We went from offering just the GWO Basic Safety Training last fall to now offering almost the entire suite of GWO trainings–eight in total, which includes 18 modules,” said Kat Bell, Coordinator for the Sustainable Energy Career Academy (SECA) at Nunez. “These competency-based, hands-on trainings are preparing technicians for a variety of situations common in the field. We can also accommodate industry partners looking for a one-stop shop for their ongoing wind tech certification needs.”

Looking to the future, Nunez has targeted the Fall 2026 semester to further expand to offer GWO Blade Repair. SECA also plans to construct a new Working at Heights and Advanced Rescue trainer outside its indoor facilities this summer.

Registration for the Fall 2026 semester is open now at Nunez.edu. Prospective students seeking more information about the Wind program and employers seeking workforce training for employees are encouraged to email Bell at [email protected]. Nunez offers both summer and on-demand training for employers in addition to its semesterly classes.

The Crane and Hoist – Basic User certification will train students to safely operate common types of heavy equipment, including small, fixed cranes and hoists in both the on- and off-shore wind industry.

Slinger Signaller will train students to guide and control the lifting and movement of heavy loads using slings, chains, and other rigging equipment.

Control of Hazardous Energies – Basic User teaches participants to work safely in the vicinity of hazardous energies in industrial environments, with a focus on risk management and Lock-Out-Tag-Out procedures.

Control of Hazardous Energies – Electrical Safety teaches site safety and permitting procedures for working in hazardous electrical environments.
