Nunez Community College in Chalmette will launch two new academic pathways this fall designed to meet the workforce needs for Louisiana’s booming industrial and residential construction sectors.
Enrollment is open now for the inaugural cohort of the Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Construction Management and Technology and the Associate of Science (AS) in Construction Leadership, with both classes beginning in Fall 2026. Classes begin Aug. 18.
“Construction Management is super hands-on. Students build, wire, and earn trade certifications in the shop, graduating ready to enter the workforce and eventually move into management roles,” said Adam Bourne, Nunez Chair of Construction Sciences and Building Trades. “Construction Leadership aligns with most four-year programs, so students that plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree can earn a certificate in Construction Management while knocking out their general education classes at Nunez.”
This expansion arrives as Louisiana’s construction sector shows a critical need for leadership and labor. Local construction managers are currently earning median annual salaries around $100,000, while skilled carpenters can expect to earn $25 to $35 per hour after just a few years in the field.

Comprehensive Training Pathways
These new programs are structured to serve students at every stage of their career journey.
The AAS in Construction Management and Technology requires 61 student credit hours (SCHs) and includes hands-on training in Carpentry, Electrical, and HVAC, alongside management fundamentals. Students will earn the following "stackable" credentials, allowing them to earn certificates as they progress:
- Certificate of Technical Studies (CTS) in Carpentry: Covers residential and small commercial framing, roofing, and interior/exterior finishes
- Certificate of Technical Studies (CTS) in Construction Management: Focuses on budgeting, scheduling, safety, and materials
- Technical Diploma (TD): Combines the Carpentry and Management certificates with foundational Electrical and HVAC training
The AS in Construction Leadership requires 60 SCHs. It is designed specifically for students who intend to transfer to a four-year university to complete a Bachelor’s degree. This pathway pairs management training with a robust general studies curriculum.
