POSITION:  Counselor/ADA Coordinator

STATEMENT OF DUTIES:  The Counselor/ADA Coordinator is responsible for academic and personal counseling (including ADA accommodation issues) and is a key member of the Student Affairs team.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Reports to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide personal counseling to students as needed for students and provide them with contact information for community resources.
  • Provide counseling to students seeking ADA accommodation related to classroom requirements.
  • Serve as a liaison between faculty and ADA students by determining, reasonable accommodations that can be applied in the classroom.
  • Provide academic advising to students as needed.  For example:
    • Advise students who are undecided, non-matriculated, or non-degree seeking.
    • Serve as a backup advisor for other students when departmental advisors are not available.
  • Contact students who enroll in courses for which they are not eligible.
  • Review mid-term and final grades for all students enrolled in developmental classes.
  • Counsel students who are referred by faculty and other staff members.
  • Notify and provide counseling to students who are placed on academic probation and suspension.
  • Maintain a database of students on academic probation and suspension and coordinate the appeals process.
  • Assist in the process of contacting students in danger of being unenrolled for non-payment.
  • Work with other Student Affairs staff to review transcripts of incoming students with previous college experience.
  • Identify students eligible for graduation and coordinate the process of applications for graduation and graduation audits.
  • Work with high-school Dual Enrollment students considering matriculation at the College.
  • Assist with registration and be available during all scheduled registration periods.
  • Attend recruiting and events as needed.
  • Provide transfer information to students and coordinate transfer university visits.
  • Serve as a liaison to Adult Education.
  • Work with Academic Affairs to ensure effective academic advising for all students.
  • Make recommendations and provide enhancements to support student retention.
  • Help ensure compliance with all rules and regulations of the College, as well as state, federal, and external agencies.
  • Assist the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs as needed with other activities to promote student success.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in counseling, social work, higher education, or related field.
  • Prefer Certification in as a Professional Counselor or a Licensed Master’s Social Worker.
  • 3-5 years’ experience in a counseling department or center preferably in a community college setting.
  • Experience working with at-risk students.
  • Knowledge of ADA guidelines and requirements related to college enrollment and attendance.
  • Proficiency with the use of technology (e.g., student administrative software, Microsoft Office) to support counseling and advising services.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Knowledge and understanding of FERPA, federal regulations, and other applicable laws.
  • An appreciation of the mission of community colleges in general and Nunez Community College in particular

POSITION STATUS/SALARY RANGE: $50-$55K commensurate with qualifications and experience.  This is a 12-month position with benefits.
