The Battle of New Orleans Historical Symposium

Hosted annually at Nunez Community College in Chalmette, Louisiana, the Battle of New Orleans Historical Symposium brings together historians, scholars, and community members to explore the people, places, and legacy of one of America’s most pivotal battles.

Held each January to coincide with the anniversary of the 1815 battle, the symposium features two days of engaging lectures, discussions, and presentations on topics ranging from military strategy and battlefield medicine to the cultural and social history of early 19th-century Louisiana. Past speakers have included local and national experts who shed light on the lives of soldiers, free people of color, Native Americans, and civilians who shaped the course of the conflict and the young nation’s history.

Free and open to the public, the symposium offers an accessible and enriching way to connect with Louisiana’s heritage, fostering dialogue between academic historians and the local community in the very place where the battle was fought.
