The Nunez Community College Baseball Team said “thank you” and “good luck” to its noteworthy and departing players May 13 at the team’s annual Awards Banquet in the Physical Activity Center.

Head Coach Glenn Powell and his staff wrapped up the Pelicans’ winningest season to date with the celebration. The Pels went 33-17 and saw four players named to the NJCAA Region 23 All-Conference Team: Dorien Jackson of Lafayette, Jayce LaCava of Marrero, Brock Loque of Paulina, and Eli Woodard of Kentwood.

“We appreciate this year's group of players. They did everything we asked of them. They broke the college single-season win mark, setting a new standard for our program,” said Coach Powell. “The players moving on will be missed. We look forward to a great incoming recruiting class that will attempt to continue the success of the group leaving.”

The Pels handed out their own awards, as well. LaCava was named Team MVP. Colin Cure of Arabi was named Defensive MVP and earned the Coaches Award. Jackson earned Offensive MVP. Woodard earned Pitching MVP. And Matthew Cody of Hammond earned the Iron Pelican Award for his leadership in the weight room.

Academic excellence was front and center as 25 players were recognized for earning a GPA above 3.0. Connor Stelly of Lafayette earned a perfect 4.0.

The Pels also spotlighted graduating players, presenting each with a framed jersey to commemorate their time at Nunez and a graduation stoll representing Nunez Baseball.

Seven grads will be moving on to new teams next year. LaCava will join the Ragin’ Cajuns at the University of Louisiana. Cure will join the Loyola Wolfpack. Jackson will join LSU Shreveport. Blake Moss of Lake Charles will join LSU Alexandria. Both Cody and Alan Mason of Slidell will join Louisiana Christian University. And Owen Forbes of Walker will join University of Texas at Permian Basin.

“We’ll miss all the players who are moving on from Nunez,” said Katherine Lemoine, Nunez Associate Vice Chancellor of Advancement, whose purview includes Nunez Athletics. “Our student athletes are always such wonderful ambassadors for the college. We’ll miss them on the field, but we’ll also miss their enthusiasm and leadership in the community at events like the Special Olympics. They made us so proud.”
