VITA Offers Free Tax Filing Service on Nunez Campus

VITA tax preparers Gail Jenkins and Gwen Ricks are shown in front of the Nunez Library

VITA Site Coordinator Gail Jenkins and Gwen Ricks are providing free tax filing services on behalf of the United Way’s VITA program on the Nunez campus. Visitors are welcome to take advantage of this service and do not have to be enrolled in or otherwise affiliated with Nunez.

The public is invited to take advantage of free tax preparation on the Nunez Community College campus courtesy of the United Way of Southeast Louisiana’s VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program.

Visitors do not need to be enrolled in classes at Nunez or affiliated with the college in any way to participate in the VITA program. Gail Jenkins, VITA Site Coordinator, says visitors have traveled from as far as Plaquemines Parish to leave their tax documents with her and her colleague Gwen Ricks in the AST Building on the Nunez campus.

Miss Gail and Miss Gwen are available on Wednesdays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m.-4 p.m., and Fridays from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. They are located in the conference room right in front of Nunez Library entrance and will be taking documents right up to the tax deadline on April 15.

The income cap for the VITA program is $67,000, but VITA is able to serve individuals and families with higher income depending on the complexity of their returns. Any questions can be emailed to Miss Gail at [email protected].

Taxpayers must provide copies of their photo ID and Social Security cards for themselves and all dependents, and must return to the AST Building to sign their prepared returns before they can be electronically filed. The taxpayer’s spouse must also sign the return in person if filing jointly.

Documents can be dropped off during off hours when Miss Gail and Miss Gwen are not present. Sealed envelopes can be placed in a secure drop box.

The VITA program is open to all, but was established with the mission to assist individuals, families, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English-speaking taxpayers who need assistance filing their tax returns. After filing electronically, refunds will be direct deposited to filers’ bank accounts.
