Position Summary
Appointed by the Provost, the Senior Chair of Academics supports the Dean of Instruction by providing academic leadership for all Academic programs, ensuring effective course scheduling, program quality, curriculum currency and alignment with transfer pathways, compliance with accreditation and licensure requirements, and alignment with workforce needs. The Senior Chair of Academics serves as a co-chair of the College’s Curriculum Committee, serves as a member of the Educational Technology Committee, represents the College as e-Learning Coordinator for the Louisiana Community and Technical College System.

Appointment
As all full-time faculty members, Senior Program Chairs serve 9-month appointments but also work a tenth month during the summer. Senior Chairs are given a three-course release each fall and spring semester to conduct administrative duties. Should they wish, the Senior Chair of Academics may teach no more than two courses in the summer.

The Senior Chair of Academics is subject to the same 40-hour weekly work schedule as all full-time faculty of the College.

Duties and Responsibilities

Curriculum Leadership

  • Co-chair the Curriculum Committee, collaborating with the Senior Chair of Academics to set agendas, assign tasks, and ensure timely review of proposals for new courses, programs, and revisions.
  • Lead development and periodic review of general education, corequisite education, and transfer curricula to ensure alignment with four-year institutions and state requirements.
  • Ensure that Program Chairs and their respective Advisory Boards maintain curricula relevant to regional workforce needs.
  • Oversee integration of emerging technologies and industry practices into instruction.
  • Advise Program Chairs on securing programmatic accreditation. 
  • Advise Program Chairs investigating new industry-based credentials that may be incorporated into existing curricula. 

Catalog & Compliance

  • Ensure timely and accurate updates to the college catalog for all Academic programs and courses following curriculum changes.
  • Record curriculum changes in the College’s public-facing catalog. 
  • Maintain compliance with all relevant accrediting bodies, industry certification agencies, and state regulations.
  • Prepare documentation for program reviews, site visits, and audits.

Course Scheduling

  • Consult with Program Chairs to ensure that their respective semesterly course schedules are efficient and cost-effective. 

Faculty Support & Development

  • Coordinate professional development opportunities in partnership with the Dean of Instruction and HR.

e-Learning Coordination

  • Serve as a primary e-Learning Coordinator for Academic faculty, facilitating Canvas troubleshooting, training, and resource sharing.
  • Identify and promote e-Learning tools and instructional design practices that improve student engagement and success.
  • Act as liaison to the LCTCS e-Learning Coordinator Working Group.

Program Assessment & Data-Driven Improvement

  • Monitor Program Chair completion of annual program assessments.
  • Facilitate discussion between Program Chairs and departmental faculty regarding the outcomes of program assessments and recommend instructional improvements and program modifications.

College & Community Engagement

  • Advise Program Chairs on ways to strengthen partnerships with industry to support internships, apprenticeships, and job placements.
  • Assist Program Chairs with developing recruiting initiatives for their respective programs. 

Minimum Qualifications

Required Education & Experience
A master’s degree or higher in an appropriate academic discipline or master’s degree with a concentration in an academic discipline (a minimum of 18 graduate semester hours in the discipline). In lieu of 18 graduate semester hours in the teaching discipline, outstanding professional experience and demonstrated contributions to the teaching discipline will be accepted. 

Preferred Education & Experience
A minimum of three years teaching experience at the college level.
