Position: Biology Instructor – 9 Month Faculty - Full Time
Department: Health and Natural Sciences / Allied Health
Reports To: Natural Sciences Department Chair

Position Summary:
The Biology Instructor will provide students with instruction of the highest standards, evaluate student progress, prepare syllabi, assist in activities furthering the work of the institution, communicate necessary information to students, provide academic advice to students as needed, and serve on standing and ad hoc committees as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide competent instruction in the area of credentialed expertise.
  • Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education.
  • Be prompt and punctual in reporting for work, in meeting classes, and in keeping office hours.
  • Evaluate the progress of students in all classes according to institutional, divisional, departmental, and individual criteria.
  • Continue as competent faculty in the chosen discipline by seeking new knowledge, improving teaching skills, and updating professional competencies.
  • Collect, record, maintain, and submit accurate class records including grades, absences, withdrawal and/or class drop information to appropriate offices.
  • Prepare or assist in the preparation of materials such as those used in academic administration when requested, including course syllabi, program outlines, and articulation and catalog materials.
  • Serve on College committees.
  • Read and, when appropriate, communicate and follow official memoranda.
  • Participate in scheduled professional development activities.
  • Promote student leadership, enrichment, and mentoring experiences.
  • Serve as academic advisor and mentor.
  • Become familiar with institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the College Catalog and the Faculty Handbook and follow such policies and procedures.
  • Perform any other professional duties as assigned by the Natural Sciences Department Chair, Vice Chancellor for Education, Training and Success and/or the Chancellor.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Biology or Master's degree with 18 graduate hours in Biology.
  • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities.

  • Curriculum Planning & Program Development and Management.
  • Effective classroom management including maintaining a positive learning environment.
  • Leadership.
  • Mentoring.
  • Records Management.
  • Extensive knowledge of the content area.
  • Ability to effectively handle conflict productively in a professional situation.
  • Knowledge and commitment to institutional mission and values and the ability to work with stakeholders across the college to achieve and uphold those.

Physical Demands (When Applicable):

  • Ability to work in excess of 40 hours a week, which may include nights and weekends.
  • Ability to view a computer screen for long periods of time.
  • Ability to function in a high-pressure, stressful environment and meet stringent deadlines.
  • Ability to operate a computer and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to carry <25 lbs., stand, sit, reach, bend, climb, reach and push/pull.
