GIS and Coastal Studies Instructor and Program Manager

Reports To: Dean of Academic Affairs

Job Status: Full Time

Position Summary: GIS and Coastal Studies Instructor and Program Manager plans, supports and delivers instruction for credit-based college courses of 15 credit hours or the equivalent in reassigned duties each Fall & Spring semester in Electrical or related courses. The Instructor also works with Workforce Director to support non-credit opportunities related to this program for the college and is expected to collaborate with government partners to support local initiatives related to the program, including grant related activities.

Instructors participate in assessment for programs, and general college education and participate in self-governance activities, curriculum development and student support and advising. Instructors in engage in the professional community through professional development and community engagement

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The following are the functions essential to performing this job:

  • Provide instruction in face to face and online classes including preparing and delivering curriculum and supporting and maintaining a positive learning environment 40%
  • Support student learning and development through use of student conferences and mentoring activities, student feedback, including supporting a community of learning on the campus 25%
  • Actively participate in assigned college committees and departmental/ divisional activities 10%
  • Advise students and assist in enrollment and required record keeping to support Enrollment management 10%
  • Participate in assessment at the program, departmental and college level for ongoing improvement and in relation to special tasks or projects 5%
  • Participate in the professional community including appropriate professional development to maintain current knowledge and skills in the field and in pedagogy
  • Other duties as assigned by CTE Dean, VCAA or Chancellor 5%

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

This is a somewhat physically demanding job, as the individual will be expected to work with students in a hands-on capacity. The following physical abilities must be met or reasonable accommodations agreed upon:

  • Reaching, standing, walking, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.
  • Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or a moderate amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, shovel, or otherwise move objects, including larger flora and fauna growth. Sitting a great portion of the time, and utilizing computer-related equipment.

Minimum Required Qualifications:

  • Education: Master’s Degree (or related study) or a Master’s Degree and 18+ hours in a field related to Coastal Restoration, Environmental or Biological Studies.
  • Field(s) of Study: Ecology, Wetlands Ecology, Coastal Ecology, Physical Geography with focus on Coast, Related field

Preferred Qualifications:

3 years’ experience in the field to include, teaching, research, Coastal restoration or preservation or advocacy; advances experience in drone usage, GIS technology, surveying, etc. field-based experience in coastal restoration or advocacy for coastal health and recovery. Experience in facilitating shared projects between government, educational and private organization. Knowledge of southeastern Louisiana coastal community and specific knowledge of current state of the coast and challenges faced.
