Position Summary
The Emergency Medical Services Education Instructor is a 9-month faculty position responsible for planning, supporting, and delivering credit-based courses within the EMS program and related disciplines. This position involves providing instruction in both classroom and laboratory settings and actively participating in program assessment and continuous improvement efforts. Instruction takes place primarily on the Nunez Community College campus in Chalmette, LA, with occasional teaching at partner sites throughout the greater New Orleans area to support dual enrollment and community partnerships. The instructor is expected to maintain a full-time work schedule consistent with a 40-hour workweek.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Deliver face-to-face instruction and prepare curriculum that fosters a positive learning environment.
- Provide hands-on lab instruction to equip students with essential EMS skills.
- Support student learning through mentoring, conferences, academic advising, course selection, and career guidance.
- Collaborate with colleagues to cultivate a supportive learning community.
- Assist with scheduling clinical and field practicums in coordination with EMSE Clinical Coordinator and Program Chair.
- Participate in program, departmental, and college-level assessments for continuous improvement.
- Engage in recruitment and registration events.
- Serve on at least one college committee annually.
- Attend relevant professional conferences (e.g., LANREMT, ACCREDITCON, NAEMSE, EMS WORLD).
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Chancellor, Provost, Dean of Nursing and Allied Health, or EMSE Program Chair.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education/Certification/Licensure:
- Current Paramedic certification with National Registry of EMTs.
- Licensure as a paramedic in the State of Louisiana.
- Ability to obtain EMS Instructor licensure in Louisiana
Required Experience:
- Minimum two years’ field experience as a paramedic providing direct patient care.
- Minimum two years’ classroom teaching experience (Field Training Officer experience may substitute for classroom teaching).
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Dynamic leadership and effective communication skills across EMS knowledge levels.
- Strong organizational and time management abilities.
- Proficiency in instructional methods, student testing, and evaluation techniques.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Experience:
- Associate degree or higher.
- Licensed EMS Instructor in the State of Louisiana.
- Previous experience in higher education.
- Certified American Heart Association Instructor in one or more of the following: Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
- National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) Instructor certification in one or more disciplines including EMS Safety, All Hazards Disaster Response, Advanced Medical Life Support, Emergency Pediatric Care, Geriatric Education for EMS, Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support, Tactical Emergency Casualty Care.
- National Association of EMS Educators (NAEMSE) Level II Instructor certification, including Skills Instructor and Lesson Planning.
- Critical Care Paramedic Certification(s).
