Position: Maintenance Foreman
Department: Facilities
Reports to: Vice Chancellor for Finance & Operations
Position Summary
The Maintenance Foreman directs and performs skilled mechanical maintenance work in the installation, operation, repair, and maintenance of refrigeration, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing, and basic electrical systems for the campus. The Maintenance Foreman is responsible for planning and scheduling daily and weekly maintenance activities for the general mechanics and assigned trades within the Facilities Department in coordination with the Vice Chancellor for Finance & Operations (VCFO) and assigns work to general maintenance workers and other assigned trades. The Foreman also assists in developing, implementing, and monitoring preventive maintenance programs for mechanical systems, supervises the performance of emergency and routine maintenance on campus facilities and systems, and enforces federal regulations governing environmental protection, hazardous waste disposal and the use of chemical substances and materials.
Minimum Qualifications
Required Education
- High School diploma or equivalent PLUS completion of a technical training program worth at least 15 hours of college credit, or completion of a recognized apprenticeship program, or a combination of the two.
- Must have a valid LA driver’s license.
Required Experience
- Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in the installation, repair, and maintenance of industrial or commercial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), electrical, plumbing, and refrigeration systems.
Accepted Substitutions
- Documented journeyman status in an electrical, mechanical, or plumbing trade will substitute for three (3) years of the required experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the required experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must be highly skilled in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, and plumbing.
- Skills in the proper use of test equipment, hand & power tools, diagnosing and trouble-shooting equipment malfunctions and systems failures are required.
- Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Supervisory skills and administrative ability are required.
- Computer literacy is required.
- The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required
Preferred Experience
- Documented journeyman status in an electrical, mechanical, or plumbing trade.
Preferred Certification
- EPA certification for universal handling of Type I, Type II, and Type III refrigerants.
